Wedding at Château La Commanderie – A Historic Wedding Venue in the South of France
21 September 2026
Hidden in the peaceful countryside of the Lauragais, between Carcassonne and Toulouse, Château La Commanderie is one of those places that immediately feels full of history. For couples dreaming of bringing their family and friends together for a destination wedding in France, La Commanderie offers something particularly special: a historic château that can become your own private home for the celebration.

A historic château between Carcassonne and Toulouse
The history of Château La Commanderie stretches back centuries. Originally associated with the Cathar history of the region, the property later became a Commanderie of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, or Knights of Malta.
That history can still be felt throughout the château today.
Rather than having been transformed into a contemporary hotel, La Commanderie has retained the atmosphere of a private historic residence. Antique furniture, artworks, old stone, beautiful windows and individual rooms all contribute to its wonderfully eclectic character.

The château is set within approximately four hectares of parkland and gardens, surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Lauragais.
Its location is also particularly interesting for a destination wedding. Mirepoix is approximately 15 minutes away, while both Carcassonne and Toulouse and their airports, are around 45 minutes from the château.

A private château for a destination wedding in France
One of the things I particularly like about Château La Commanderie is the possibility of creating a wedding that extends beyond the wedding day itself.
The château can be privately hired, allowing your closest family and friends to stay together and enjoy the property over several days.
The estate can accommodate up to 29 guests in total: 21 guests in the main château, across ten bedrooms, and a further 8 guests in the independent 18th-century cottage, which offers four additional bedrooms.
It creates the possibility of arriving before the wedding, sharing dinners together, enjoying the gardens and pool, celebrating the wedding itself and then meeting again the following morning for a relaxed breakfast or brunch.
For a destination wedding, where guests may have travelled from the UK, the US or elsewhere in Europe, I think this slower rhythm can be particularly lovely. The wedding becomes a shared experience rather than simply a single day.

The Salle des Chevaliers and outdoor celebrations
Inside the château, the impressive Salle des Chevaliers provides a beautiful setting for a wedding reception and is one of the property’s most distinctive spaces.
Together with the adjoining reception rooms, the château can host wedding celebrations for up to 130 guests.

Outside, the park gives couples several possibilities for the day. There are terraces, lawns, mature trees and the long château façades themselves, creating different settings as the light changes throughout the day.
A ceremony beneath the trees can lead naturally into cocktails in the gardens, dinner around the château and an evening celebration inside.
For photography, having so many different environments within one property is wonderful. Historic interiors, stone architecture, open countryside and gardens all offer very different possibilities without needing to leave the venue.

A wedding venue with personality
This isn’t a château that feels overly polished or impersonal. There are details everywhere ; paintings, antique furniture, books, sculptures, colours and objects collected over time.
The château is still a family home, and its current owner is an artist. That creative influence can be felt throughout the property.
For couples looking for perfectly symmetrical, minimalist interiors, there are other venues that may fit that vision better. But for those who love history, art, old French houses and places that feel as though they have stories to tell, La Commanderie has a genuine charm.
From a photographer’s point of view, these layers are also what make a place interesting. They create unexpected backgrounds, textures and little corners in which to make photographs that feel connected to the venue itself.

Getting married in the South of France
The countryside between Toulouse and Carcassonne is a beautiful part of the South of France for a destination wedding.
It offers vineyards, medieval villages, rolling landscapes and historic properties while remaining accessible through two international airports.
Nearby Mirepoix is particularly lovely, with its medieval centre and colourful timber-framed buildings, while Carcassonne and its UNESCO-listed medieval citadel are less than an hour away.
For guests travelling to France for several days, it means a wedding at Château La Commanderie can easily become part of a longer stay discovering this quieter corner of Occitanie.
If you are still exploring wedding venues in the region, you may also like to discover Château St Pierre de Serjac, which offers a very different interpretation of a destination wedding in the South of France.

Photographing a wedding at Château La Commanderie
As a wedding photographer based near Carcassonne, I am always interested in venues that allow a wedding to unfold naturally.
At La Commanderie, there is space for that.
The bedrooms and château interiors offer atmospheric settings for the preparations. The park provides beautiful possibilities for an outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour, while the architecture and surrounding countryside create wonderful backgrounds for portraits later in the day.
But more importantly, having everyone staying and celebrating together in one place creates the kind of moments I particularly love to photograph — the conversations, embraces, children running through the gardens, friends meeting again the following morning and all the small moments that happen between the traditional parts of a wedding day.
If you are planning a wedding at Château La Commanderie and are looking for a photographer with a natural, elegant and documentary approach, I would love to hear about your plans.
